Refined Carbs for the Soul [3] – Summer-licious Books!

First off, I wanted to thank everyone who commented on my April book post – I’ve had a lot of great suggestions on how to organize my reading list, and since I’m already done with Graceling, I’ll be moving on towards The Summoning asap! Thanks everyone for all the great advice! You’ll definitely be hearing from me as I get through them.

Secondly, this week’s Refined Carbs post is a little different, because it’s so late (bashful grin). Instead, think of this as a sort of Waiting on Wednesday post. Yes, I’m talking about none other than the awesome books coming out this summer that we’re all pretty darned excited about. And since I’m expecting a few great shipments myself, my excitement level is at a massive high. WOOT FOR NEW BOOKS!!!

So here are some of the books I’m looking forward to this May/June. I apologize for the tragic lack of images… WordPress and I don’t quite get along like that yet:

Being Nikki – Meg Cabot (Out now!)

Things aren’t pretty for Emerson Watts.

Em was sure there couldn’t be anything worse than being a brainiac the body of a teenaged supermodel.

But it turned out she was wrong. Because that supermodel could turn out to have a mother who’s gone mysteriously missing, a brother who’s shown up on her doorstep demanding answers, a former best friend who’s intent on destroying Stark Enterprises to avenge the death of his lost love, and a British heartthrob who’s written a song about her that’s topping the charts.

How can Em balance all that with school, runway shows, and weekend jaunts to St. Johns – especially when she’s got ex-boyfriends crawling out of the woodwork who want more than just a photo op; a sister who is headed to the high school cheerleading championships; a company she represents that seems to be turning to the dark side…
Not to mention trying to convince the love of her life that models aren’t really airheads after all…especially one model in particular.

But then, nobody said it was going to be easy being Nikki.

Lovestruck Summer – Melissa Walker (Also out now!)

Austin music fest
Yay, summer in Austin!
Good food, good times. Fun for everyone!
Okay, living with my sorority-brainwashed cousin, who willingly goes by “Party Penny,” is not exactly what I had in mind.
All your favorite bands
But the cute musicians I’ve met totally make up for it . . . like Sebastian. Swoon.
All ages welcome
So why can’t I stop thinking about Penny’s friend All-American Russ and his Texas twang??
Saturday & Sunday, from noon to midnight
Don’t wait up!

Waiting For You – Susane Colasanti (Releasing May 14)

At the beginning of her sophomore year, Marisa is ready for a fresh start and, more importantly, a boyfriend. So when the handsome and popular Derek asks her out, Marisa thinks her long wait for happiness is over. But several bumps in the road – including her parents’ unexpected separation, a fight with her best friend, and a shocking disappointment in her relationship with Derek – test Marisa’s ability to maintain her new outlook. Only the anonymous DJ, whose underground podcasts have the school’s ear, seems to understand what Marisa is going through. But she has no idea who he is – or does she?

In this third romantic novel from Susane Colasanti, Marisa learns how to ‘be in the Now’ and realizes that the love she’s been waiting for has been right in front of her all along.

Tap & Gown (Book 4 – Secret Society Girl Series) – Diana Peterfreund

(Releasing May 20)

This book doesn’t even need an introduction. I cannot wait to see how the series ends! EEEK!

The Chosen One – Carol Lynch Williams

Thirteen-year-old Kyra has grown up in an isolated polygamous community without questioning her father’s three wives and her twenty brothers and sisters. Or at least without questioning them much—if you don’t count her secret visits to the Mobile Library on Wheels to read forbidden books, or her meetings with the boy she hopes to choose for herself instead of having a man chosen for her. But when the Prophet decrees that Kyra must marry her 60-year-old uncle—who already has six wives—Kyra must make a desperate choice in the face of violence and her own fears of losing her family.

Dull Boy – Sarah Cross (Coming May 15)

Superpowers are awesome – unless you actually have them, like Avery does. There’s only so much he can pass off as “adrenaline” before people start to get suspicious. Probably it’s best to lie low, so guys in white lab coats don’t come to carry him away, to find out what makes his freakish body tick. Who wants to be vivisected? But flying under the radar becomes a whole lot harder when you can actually fly. It’s dangerous to be different, so for now he’ll pretend to be normal, unremarkable Avery – a dull boy – anything to keep his secret safe.

What he doesn’t expect is the horrifying truth about where his powers came from, who else might have them, and the madness of one villain’s plan to turn this superpowered dull boy into something even more powerful and amazing.

Twenty Boy Summer – Sarah Ockler (Coming this June!)

“Don’t worry, Anna. I’ll tell her, okay? Just let me think about the best way to do it.”
“Okay.”
“Promise me? Promise you won’t say anything?”
“Don’t worry.” I laughed. “It’s our secret, right?”

According to her best friend Frankie, twenty days in ZanzibarBay is the perfect opportunity to have a summer fling, and if they meet one boy ever day, there’s a pretty good chance Anna will find her first summer romance. Anna lightheartedly agrees to the game, but there’s something she hasn’t told Frankie—she’s already had that kind of romance, and it was with Frankie’s older brother, Matt, just before his tragic death one year ago.

Beautifully written and emotionally honest, this is a debut novel that explores what it truly means to love someone and what it means to grieve, and ultimately, how to make the most of every single moment this world has to offer.

Fairy Tale – Cyn Balog (Coming this June)

A captivating and witty dark fantasy that will have girls lusting after it.

Morgan Sparks has always known that she and her boyfriend, Cam, are made for each other. But when Cam’s cousin Pip comes to stay with the family, Cam seems depressed. Finally Cam confesses to Morgan what’s going on: Cam is a fairy. The night he was born, fairies came down and switched him with a healthy human boy. Nobody expected Cam to live, and nobody expected his biological brother, heir to the fairy throne, to die. But both things happened, and now the fairies want Cam back to take his rightful place as Fairy King.

Even as Cam physically changes, becoming more miserable each day, he and Morgan pledge to fool the fairies and stay together forever. But by the time Cam has to decide once and for all what to do, Morgan’s no longer sure what’s best for everyone, or whether her and Cam’s love can weather an uncertain future.

And of course,

Twenties Girl – Sophie Kinsella (Coming July 21)

No blurb for this yet… but you can’t go wrong with a Kinsella! =D

Any of these sound interesting to you? Well there’s good news! Now there’s a chance to win two of the above books – Melissa Walker’s Lovestruck Summer and Susane Colasanti’s Waiting For You, courtesy of the authors themselves! If that doesn’t convince you, watch this awesome video shot by Carrie Bradshaw’s stoop, and featuring one of my favorite John Mayer tracks ever!

Sound simple enough? Just go here to enter for Melissa’s prizes, or here for Susane’s prizes!

So I know a lot of people are in the middle of finals/APs/other yucky stuff, and can’t wait for the summer to start. My sympathies and best wishes to all of you! What are you going to splurge on to kickstart your summer?
